Two men have been shot by police after allegedly driving a stolen car, taken from the home of state Labor MP Karen McKeown, at officers in an underground car park of a unit complex in Sydney’s west.

Police were called to Lane Street in Wentworthville following up reports of a stolen car at 12.10pm today, NSW Police said.

The white Mercedes-Benz SUV was allegedly stolen from McKeown’s home in the early hours of this morning.

Police were able to locate the vehicle as the car had a GPS tracker, which was accessed by the owner who provided officers with the location, South West Metropolitan Region Commander Paul Dunstan said.

Officers then arrived at the location and entered an underground car park of the unit block, when the allegedly stolen car was driven towards them.

“As they walked down the driveway they found a locked garage door with a car inside, as they opened the garage the vehicle accelerated towards them,” Dunstan said.

Shots were fired by three police officers, injuring two men inside the car.

The officers involved included a sergeant and a probationary officer who has been on the job for six months.

The officers rendered first aid as paramedics arrived.

Both men have been taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment.

It’s understood one person has sustained serious injuries to the neck, and another has sustained serious injuries to the thigh.

The officers were not injured.

MP’s husband’s car stolen prior to shooting

Police said the car was taken from McKeown’s home in Leonay, near Penrith earlier this morning.

The men took the car keys from inside the home in order to take the car, police alleged.

McKeown and her husband were home at the time, but were not aware of the alleged robbery until after they woke up.

“Last night my home was broken into and my husband’s car stolen. I reported this to police,” the MP said in a statement.

“While I am shaken from the events, thankfully I am unharmed. I want to thank NSW Police, in particular the local area command at both Penrith and Cumberland Police, for their prompt response.

“Political leaders often praise police for their bravery. Today, I have had a first-hand experience of this.”

McKeown has postponed an event she was scheduled to appear at tomorrow.

Critical incident declared following shooting

A critical incident was declared at 1.24pm, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said.

“The Critical Incident team has been formed from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad,” Webb said.

“That investigation will be subject to an independent review.”
