Anthony Burke is in Mt Waverley, in eastern Melbourne this week on Grand Designs Australia for an ambitious take on a traditional courtyard style house complete with an integrated ‘granny flat’ and secret lap pool.
What’s better than one highly skilled and creative architect working on your dream forever home? Two of course! Or is it?
Husband and wife team Gaurav and Vish are both successful architects who, for the very first time, are working together on a multigenerational project for their family in the suburbs of Mount Waverley. It’s a job which will challenge them both professionally and personally.
Designed with both their aging parents – who presently live in India – and their young children in mind, they’re adopting an ambitious, bold and modern take on a traditional courtyard style house complete with an integrated ‘granny flat’ and secret lap pool.
Inspired by the earthy rich tones of terracotta, and its ability to keep things cold or warm, their home will be entirely clad with terracotta tiles made from a local supplier. In fact, over nine thousand will cover the roof and walls, which will no doubt set them apart from their neighbours.
For Gaurav and Vish, who know all too well how building projects can blow out, they’ve cleverly chosen to work with a prefabricated product for all the internal walls and ceilings, saving them time and money. The only problem is, the prefab panels are manufactured overseas, putting them at the mercy of the international supply chain and extensive shipping delays.
And with a self-imposed deadline of celebrating Diwali Festival all together in their new home, will their usually unflappable demeanour come undone? And importantly, what will the in-laws make of their unusual new terracotta covered home?
