A child has died and 10 other people have been injured in a car crash in the remote Northern Territory town of Kalkarindji.

A Toyota Prado carrying 11 people had crashed on Mardiyardu Road, between Kalkarindji and Lajamanu, about 11am yesterday, police said.

The vehicle was then allegedly driven back into Kalkarindji, about 500 kilometres outside Darwin, where it was met by CareFlight teams.

A eight-year-old child was declared dead a short time later.

The 10 other occupants, including a 29-year-old woman who was allegedly driving, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Two crime scenes were established, one at the crash site and another at the vehicle.

“This is a complex crash involving alcohol and a large number of unrestrained passengers that has tragically resulted in the death of a young child,” Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Musgrave said.

He added that communication has been difficult due to the remote location, but police remain at both sites.

Police are supporting the families of those involved and have asked anyone with information to come forward.
